Submitted Thursday, September 02, 2010 @ 10:57 AM
nytimes.com -- Scientists at Rice University and Hewlett-Packard are reporting this week that they can overcome a fundamental barrier to the continued rapid miniaturization of computer memory that has been the basis for the consumer electronics revolution.

In recent years the limits of physics and finance faced by chip makers had loomed so large that experts feared a slowdown in the pace of miniaturization that would act like a brake on the ability to pack ever more power into ever smaller devices like laptops, smartphones and digital cameras. Facebook loophole reveals names, pictures with sign-on errors
Submitted Thursday, August 19, 2010 @ 01:19 AM
zdnet.com -- It looks like there’s yet another little bug that compromises the privacy of Facebook users - all 500 million of them - and it doesn’t matter how a user has set the account’s privacy settings.

The bug can be found in the error page that comes when a user attempts to sign in but types in the wrong password. The system automatically populates the error page with that user’s first and last names, along with the profile picture, and gives the user the chance to re-enter the password. World record data density for ferroelectric recording
Submitted Thursday, August 19, 2010 @ 01:18 AM
physorg.com -- Scientists at Tohoku University in Japan have recorded data at a density of 4 trillion bits per square inch, which is a world record for the experimental "ferroelectric" data storage method. As described the journal Applied Physics Letters, which is published by the American Institute of Physics, this density is about eight times the density of today's most advanced magnetic hard-disk drives.

The data-recording device scans a tiny cantilever tip that rides in contact with the surface of a ferroelectric material. To write data, an electric pulse is sent through the tip, changing the electric polarization and nonlinear dielectric constant of a tiny circular spot in the substrate beneath. To read data, the same tip detects the variations in nonlinear dielectric constant in the altered regions. See the complete story here.

Millions of routers vulnerable to new version of old attack
Submitted Monday, July 19, 2010 @ 03:02 PM
Belkin company information - ( Belkin News )
arstechnica.com -- A presentation due to be shown at the Black Hat security conference at the end of the month will show that many of the routers used for residential internet connections are vulnerable to attack by hackers. The attacks would allow traffic to be redirected and intercepted, in addition to giving hackers access to victims' local networks.

The title of the presentation, "How to Hack Millions of Routers," gives a clear indication of the scale of the potential issues. Popular router models from Netgear, Linksys, and Belkin were found to be vulnerable, including models used for Verizon's FIOS and DSL services, as were widely-used third-party firmwares such as DD-WRT and OpenWrt. About half the routers tested did not appear to be vulnerable. See the complete story here.

When Apple’s market capitalization surged past Microsoft’s earlier this year, many heralded it as the second coming of Jobs and the end of the Microsoft era. Instead, with the company’s recent problems combined with this slip in share price, Apple’s dependence on the continued strength of a small handful of products has been laid bare. HP company information - ( HP News )
crunchgear.com -- A short time ago, HP applied to the USPTO for a trademark. “Palmpad.” I can’t be the only one who just gets a good feeling from this.

We knew that HP was going to get their money’s worth from Palm when they nixed their Android plans and downplayed their Windows 7 tablet. While reports still have them making the latter in at least some form, statements from HP and Palm indicate that webOS is going to be the focus for HP’s portable computer business.
